The plane carrying the body of South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa has landed at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Mthethwa’s body was found in a Paris hotel’s inner courtyard more than a week ago. He was 58.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has accorded Mthethwa a special official funeral category two, which will take place in KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday.

“Air France 990, touched down here at OR Tambo at about 8:44, and there’s a sigh of relief for the family members, especially as you know the circumstances around the death. There are still quite a lot of questions. In this regard, investigations are still underway. And of course, it doesn’t end here at OR Tambo. This is a transit point. We do understand that around 1 p.m. they’ll be heading to King Shaka International Airport in KwaZulu-Natal. And then thereafter, they’ll be going down to the northern part of KZN in KwaMbonambi in the homestead,” reports Khayelihle Khumalo.

The ambassador’s body left Paris in France accompanied by his family.

Mthethwa died last week after falling from a hotel room prior following his disappearance prior to the incident.

The International Relations Department is holding a memorial service for Mthethwa in Pretoria this morning.

Mthethwa will be buried in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.
