PMB woman set to walk to Joburg to raise awareness on GBV & fibroids

Thandeka Sibiya from Pietermaritzburg plans to embark on a solo walk from Pietermaritzburg to Johannesburg next month to raise awareness about fibroids and gender-based violence (GBV).
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or on the uterus, which may cause heavy or painful periods and pelvic pain in women.
She has called on men to show their solidarity by walking with her and protecting her along the way.
“Even if it’s not of a fatal risk but it does pose some challenges. These are the things that we need to discuss even before we are advised that we need to remove our uteruses. I would be walking alone for the majority of the journey. I would like to plead with men that when they see me on the road, to give me support and not to harm me.”
Last month, Joyce Netshitenzhe from Limpopo, completed a 520 km marathon from Pretoria to Thohoyandou, also to raise awareness against Gender-based Violence
