Gauteng’s Deputy Police Commissioner Fred Kekana has given a stern warning to the perpetrators of Sunday morning’s mass shooting in which 17 people were killed and 15 others injured in Wedela near Carletonville, on the West Rand.

It is alleged that patrons were drinking inside and outside the tavern when eight armed men arrived and opened fire on them with AK-47s and pistols.

Speaking at the scene of the shooting, Kekana says they have a clear picture and the names of the suspects and are investigating whether the tavern shooting is linked to another shooting in the area a month ago.

Kekana says one of those killed in the shooting is allegedly a suspect wanted in connection with the earlier incident.

He says this raises the possibility that the latest attack may be connected to the previous shooting.

“One thing for sure is that what we now know in terms of the incident is that last month, in the same tavern, we lost one life and one person was injured. It is linked from our view, and seems to be a retaliation by another group because one of the deceased is now one of the people we were looking for, and now he’s one of the victims.”
