Police officer holds his grandmother and two boys hostage in Mamelodi
A tense hostage crisis is unfolding in Mamelodi East, Tshwane, Gauteng, where a police officer is involved in a standoff with South African Police Service (SAPS) negotiators and special task forces.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the situation began around 8 am on Tuesday when a police constable allegedly held his family hostage in a residence located in the Buffer Zone of Mamelodi East.
Muridili said the constable allegedly discharged two shots prior to the police’s arrival on the scene, further escalating the gravity of the situation.
She said the hostages include the constable’s grandmother, his nephew, and a young boy.
Brigadier Muridili confirmed that negotiations are underway as law enforcement professionals assess the unfolding dynamic.
“The police on the scene are also investigating the motive which led to this situation,” she added.
