Presidency slams Trump’s intention to ban SA from attending G20

The Presidency has hit back at United States (US) President Donald Trump’s intention to bar South Africa from attending the G20 Leaders’ Summit in America next year.
It says that this is regrettable in light of the country’s continuing efforts to improve diplomatic relations with the US.
On Monday, SA handed over the G20 Presidency to the US.
The US boycotted the G20 summit in Johannesburg at the weekend, accusing Pretoria of human rights abuses against Afrikaners.
However, G20 leaders adopted the declaration.
Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says, “South Africa will continue to participate as a full, active and constructive member of the G20. We call on all members of the G20 to reaffirm its continued operation in the spirit of multilateralism based on consensus with all members participating on an equal footing in all of its structures.”
Magwenya says, “It is regrettable that despite the efforts and numerous attempts by President (Cyril) Ramaphosa and his administration to reset the diplomatic relationship with the United States, President Trump continues to apply punitive measures against South Africa based on misinformation and distortions about our country.”
