President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to launch a Truth and Reconciliation housing assistance project in Ndwedwe, north of Durban.

The project is part of the government’s efforts to give back to those that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission had identified as victims of violence during the apartheid era.

More than 200 homes were destroyed in Ndwedwe during political violence in the 80s and 90s.

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi will join President Ramaphosa in handing over grants to the beneficiaries.

Kubayi says they are correcting what happened in an attempt to heal the divisions of the past.

“The constitution says we have got to heal the divisions of the past, and we rebuild a nation, but we can’t do that without correcting what’s happened in the past. We have a TRC report that says to us, part of what we need to do is to ensure that those who, during the apartheid times, during the struggle, during the time we were fighting for freedom, during the violence would have lost their homes and we have not been able to implement this, and we are happy we are launching and we will be able to complete it this year.”
