Ramaphosa warns global inequality threatens democracy

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for urgent global action to tackle inequality, warning it remains one of the biggest threats to democracy.
He was speaking at the plenary on Extremism and Inequality at the ‘In Defence of Democracy’ initiative during his working visit to the Kingdom of Spain.
Ramaphosa emphasised that inequality undermines democratic progress and limits people’s ability to shape their own futures.

He highlighted South Africa’s push to place inequality at the centre of the global agenda, including plans to establish an International Panel on Inequality through the United Nations.
Ramaphosa says addressing inequality requires coordinated global action, calling on world leaders and institutions to support policies that promote social justice and equal opportunity.
