Scott Robertson says the All Blacks’ focus on cohesion and combinations will be key when they attempt to defend the Bledisloe Cup in Auckland this Saturday.

Robertson has made five changes to his match 23, but insists that the spine of the team remains settled after two bruising clashes with the Springboks at Eden Park and Sky Stadium in recent weeks.

“We’ve had five changes for this Test, but we believe a lot of the combinations and cohesion of the group is really important for us to keep that connection,” Robertson explained. “They won a title fight together [against South Africa] and it’s their opportunity to go and do it again this weekend for the Bledisloe.”

Reflecting on the loss to the Boks in Wellington, the All Blacks coach admitted there were lessons to be carried forward.

“There are small margins in games. We chased a game that got away from us but for the majority we played some really good footy. A lot of the core group of those guys get to play again, you learn on stage being under the spotlight. It’s another chance for them.”

The return of Caleb Clarke on the wing, alongside experienced halfbacks and a centurion hooker, has also boosted confidence.

“Obviously very important for the aerial game … you bring those four back and keep the cohesion of the rest of the group, that’s when you start to cement a bit of form.”

Robertson highlighted the strength of his bench, with only Peter Lakai under 10 Test caps. Veteran lock Patrick Tuipulotu returns from injury, while Samisoni Taukei’aho and Damian McKenzie shift to impact roles.

But the absence of captain Scott Barrett through injury is a major loss.

“He’s so mentally and physically tough, for him not to play this one … it’s pretty hard not to see his name up there,” Robertson admitted. “He’s just not quite right for this weekend and pushing to get back next weekend.”
