Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation says the US plan to bar the country from next year’s G20 Summit in Miami, Florida, does not singularly affect South Africa.

On Wednesday evening, US President Donald Trump said that South Africa will not be invited to next year’s G20 Summit.

In a post on Truth Social, he said the United States did not attend this year’s summit in Johannesburg because the South African government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Rights abuses endured by Afrikaners.

The Portfolio Committee says G20 members, as a body that adopts a consensus approach, must intervene.

Committee Chairperson Supra Mahumapelo says the G20 is a consensus-based type of organisation.

“It is unprecedented what President Trump is doing. I think one of the implications that may face… the US itself, based on this desire by President Trump, is further self-global isolation. The member states that were here in South Africa overwhelmingly supported South Africa in the manner in which it had conducted and hosted the G20. So the ball is actually in the court of the United States of America. And I don’t think that President Trump will achieve that objective anyway.”
