SAMWU hails City of Tshwane for 3.5% salary increment
The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) has hailed the current City of Tshwane administration for finally implementing the long-outstanding 3.5% salary increase owed to municipal workers since 2021.
However, the union emphasised that the responsibility for the delay lies with the previous administration, which failed to honour the agreed wage increase over several years.
The increase applies to more than 21,000 employees and will cover basic salaries and benefits, with back pay to be processed from July 2021.
Tshwane Regional Chairperson of SAMWU, Lehlogonolo Maphatsoe, says, “We are here, sitting in this room, trying to fix the mess that has been created by Cilliers Brink. We are here because we had an administration that did not have the interest of workers at heart. We had an administration that presided over the collapse of the finances of this city.”
