Taxi plunges into crèche in KZN Midlands, killing three children



Three children were killed after a taxi crashed into a crèche in the Imbali area in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday morning. 

Eleven others were injured. 

According to KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service, the collision took place at 7:30 am on the T6 road on Wednesday.

“The scene was chaotic and deeply distressing. A crumpled taxi lay amidst the wreckage of the creche building. Children’s cries filled the air as paramedics worked tirelessly to stabilize the injured,” the service said.

The youngest victims, aged between nine and 11, died at the scene.

The injured, all aged between nine and fifteen, sustained injuries ranging from critical to serious.

“Two patients are in critical condition, and nine are seriously injured,” KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service added.

MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said that apparently the driver transporting children lost control of his minibus taxi and plunged into a creche.

He confirmed that his office had taken immediate steps to support those impacted.

“I have assigned a team from my office and the department to visit the scene of the accident and the families of the affected children. We will provide more information after consultation with families and relevant healthcare professionals. Our hearts are with the parents of the affected children,” Duma said.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service extended condolences to the families and praised its personnel for their response.

“KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service expresses its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident. We commend the bravery and professionalism of our paramedics who worked tirelessly under incredibly difficult circumstances.”
