Three killed in horror KZN crash
At least three people died when a car blew a tyre and smashed head-on into a fuel tanker on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.
The crash happened near the Frere Interchange between Estcourt and the Tugela River at about 11am, Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Sindi Msimang said.
“The light motor vehicle had a tyre burst while travelling on the southbound,” Msimang said.
“It [the car] capsized and landed on the northbound … that is where it collided head-on with the tanker.”
The Johannesburg-bound lanes were closed, and traffic officers diverted all vehicles onto the centre median, causing long delays for motorists heading north.
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) said: “The severity of the crash and the risks associated with the highly flammable cargo require even more stringent control on scene than usual.”
IPSS Medical Rescue said a fourth occupant sustained critical injuries and was stabilised on scene before being transported to a nearby facility for further care.
“We urge motorists travelling today to do so with caution” IPSS spokesperson Samantha Meyrick said.
