Thursday is set to bring significant weather changes across South Africa, with severe storms expected in parts of the Northern Cape.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for areas around Upington, warning of potential localised damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, property, vehicles, and livestock, as well as possible disruptions to municipal services.

Residents can expect scattered thunderstorms, with Upington and surrounding areas facing a 60% chance of rainfall, strong winds, and lightning.

Other towns, including Graaff-Reinet and Cradock, are also expected to see similar rain chances. Isolated storms (30%) may develop in Kimberley, De Aar, and Beaufort West.

The Free State and parts of Gauteng, such as Johannesburg and Welkom, will see partly cloudy skies and occasional cool breezes, though no significant rainfall is expected.

Meanwhile, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal will enjoy warm and dry conditions with mostly sunny skies.

Coastal regions will largely remain dry, with the Western Cape, including Cape Town, Worcester, and George, seeing cool but fine weather, while KwaZulu-Natal’s coast, from Durban to Port Shepstone, will remain warm and dry with light to moderate easterly winds.

Residents in storm-affected areas are urged to remain cautious and monitor local updates, as the severe weather may disrupt travel and outdoor activities across central and western South Africa.
