A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years behind bars by the Upington Magistrate’s Court in the Northern Cape for the murder of his 15-year-old cousin.

The incident occurred on New Year’s Eve when cousins Geraldo Filander and Calvin Brouw fought over R10.

Filander was arrested a day after the incident.

Police spokesperson, Omphile Masegela elaborates, “The accused, Geraldo Filander (20), fatally stabbed his 15-year-old cousin Calvin Brouw and fled the scene after that.  The investigating officer arrested him the following day, and he was then released on bail. The accused was released on bail.  Geraldo was convicted and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment in the Upington Regional Court.”
