Weekend weather: Damaging winds hit Western Cape as rain and thunderstorms spread across KZN, Gauteng and Limpopo
South Africans can expect a dynamic mix of strong coastal winds, hot conditions in the west and scattered to widespread showers over the eastern half of the country this weekend, according to the South African Weather Service.
A Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds is in place from Saturday into Sunday for parts of the Western Cape and Namaqua. Along the west and south-west coast, strong to near-gale force south to south-easterly winds are expected on Saturday, reaching speeds of 50 to 62 km/h with gusts between 70 and 85 km/h.
These conditions are likely to shift to the south coast on Sunday, where similarly strong easterly to south-easterly winds will develop. Motorists along coastal routes should be cautious of blowing sand, while small vessels and harbour operations may experience brief disruptions.
Saturday will be very hot in parts of the Northern Cape and the West Coast, with interior areas remaining warm to hot. Rain chances increase over the central and eastern interior, with a 30% chance of isolated showers over parts of the Northern Cape and central regions.
Scattered showers and thundershowers, with rain chances of up to 60%, are expected over Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and parts of the Free State. Along the east coast and eastern Eastern Cape, rain may become more widespread, with chances rising to 80 percent in some areas.
On Sunday, hot conditions persist in the west, while much of the interior remains warm. Isolated showers continue over parts of the Northern Cape with a 30% chance, while scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers are expected across the eastern half of the country.
Rain chances remain around 60% over KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, with locally heavy downpours possible. Strong coastal winds will continue along the south coast, maintaining rough sea conditions.
Residents are urged to stay informed of the latest forecasts and take precautions in areas affected by strong winds and thunderstorms as the busy weekend unfolds.
