Workers at RCL Foods Sugar and Milling, affiliated to different labour unions, have embarked on a protected strike action following a deadlock in salary negotiations.

They are demanding a 13% increase across the board, while the employer is offering 5.4%.

President of the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) Nico Ndima says their members will not return to work until they get a better offer.

“Currently we are demanding 13% and while we were negotiating at some stage, we were willing to take 6% which was the Commissioner’s proposal and it was rejected by the employer. Hence we went back to our initial position which was 13% and 6% is no longer on the table now because it was a conditional offer from the Commission of the CCMA.”
