The 15th Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) national congress reconvenes at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni today following its collapse last month.

Among other priorities, a new leadership will be elected.

The initial gathering adjourned prematurely in September at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, due to credentials disputes and the failure to form a quorum.

SABC News has reliably learnt that recent court attempts by aggrieved unions to interdict the congress this week were dismissed on Friday for a lack of urgency.

Cosatu spokesperson Zanele Sabela says, “The 3 day event will bring together more than 1 800 delegates from affiliates, alliance partners, local and international guests, and conclude with a presentation of the Congress Declaration, and the announcement of the elected Cosatu National Office bearers.”

“Cosatu president, Zingiswa Losi, will deliver the opening address, with messages of support from alliance partners, the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP), and the South African National Civic Organization (SANCO). The Political Organisational Economic and International Reports will also be tabled at Congress,” explains Sabela.
