Inspectors suspended over repairs scandal at Soweto's Noordgesig Secondary School

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has suspended two inspectors from its Infrastructure Unit following concerns regarding the handling of a repair project at Noordgesig Secondary School in Soweto.

This comes in the wake of a devastating fire that occurred at the school on June 27, 2024.

Following the fire, which caused significant damage, the GDE allocated funds for urgent repairs and rehabilitation work at the affected school.

However, recent reports have suggested that the necessary repairs have either not been completed or that only some of the agreed-upon upgrades have been undertaken, prompting alarm among stakeholders.

In response to these troubling findings, the Department has launched an internal investigation to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the management of the project.

A spokesperson for the GDE confirmed that “we will announce the outcome of the investigation once it has been completed,” indicating a commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing any potential mismanagement.
