Man and teen killed in New Brighton shooting, police launch manhunt for suspects
Police in the Eastern Cape have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects involved in a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of a 29-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl, and left a nine-year-old boy injured in Kwazakele, Gqeberha.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg says the shooting took place on Friday afternoon, July 18. The victims had just returned from a shopping trip when gunmen opened fire.
“It is alleged that the deceased arrived at home at Sidindi Street, Kwazakele after doing shopping with his girlfriend, her daughter, his sister, 13, and brother, 9,” said van Rensburg.
“As he dropped off his girlfriend and her daughter, 12, they entered the house and soon thereafter the girlfriend heard multiple gunshots being fired.”
A witness reported seeing approximately six suspects firing several shots at the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The 29-year-old man, who was seated in the driver’s seat of a silver VW Polo, and the 13-year-old girl in the back seat, were both declared dead at the scene.
The nine-year-old boy sustained gunshot wounds to both legs and was rushed to hospital.
Police say the motive for the attack remains unknown and no arrests have been made.
The Nelson Mandela Metro Detective Intervention Task Team is investigating the double murder and attempted murder and is appealing for public assistance.
“Any person that could assist police with information to solve this investigation can contact the investigating officer at WO Leslie Kilian on 082 410 7492 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said van Rensburg.
