Youth League in KZN calls for ANC’s immediate withdrawal from GPU – SABC News

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has called for the immediate withdrawal of the ANC from the government of provincial unity (GPU).

The Youth League has accused both the IFP and the DA of trying to liquidate the ANC.

The ANC, IFP, DA and the NFP formed a government of provincial unity to govern KZN after last year’s general elections.

The ANCYL says the decision by the ANC to enter into the GPU with the DA and IFP was a grave mistake.

The ANCYL says the current GPU does not serve the interests of the citizen of the province.

“There are a number of attempts or situations of liquidating the African National Congress and we are saying to the leaders of the African National Congress, they must now think about the ANC, they must make sure that engage with all the structures of the party to get true reflection of our own members,” says ANCYL Provincial Chairperson Ntokozo Ngcobo.

The ANC support base in KZN plunged from 54 percent to 17 percent in the polls, whilst the MK Party received the lions share, obtaining 45 percent of the votes.

GPU leaders, the IFP received 18 percent whilst the DA received 13 percent.

The League says there is no stability within the GPU.

“We are saying there is no other way, the ANC will never succeed in this GPU arrangement. The only approach we must take is to go on the opposition bench and service our people on the ground,” Ngcobo adds.

This week, the ANC lost control of the uMkhanyakude District municipality to the IFP.

This comes after the IFP, supported by the NFP, successfully ousted the ANC mayor in the municipality.

The Youth League says it views this decision as a way of trying to destroy the ANC ahead of  local government elections.
