Six people killed in t-bone crash between GWM Tank and minibus taxi near Dullstroom
Six people were killed and eight others injured when a minibus taxi and a GWM Tank sport utility vehicle (SUV) collided on the R540 road near Dullstroom, Mpumalanga, on Sunday.
According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the crash occurred around 2 pm and was a t-bone collision. All six victims who died were passengers in the taxi and were declared dead at the scene.
Eight people sustained serious injuries — seven passengers and the driver of the SUV — while the taxi driver suffered minor injuries. The injured were rushed to a hospital in Belfast for medical treatment.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established, but an investigation is under way.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie has urged motorists to be more cautious on the roads, warning that negligent driving continues to claim lives unnecessarily.
“We remain deeply concerned by the number of fatalities caused by road crashes that could be avoided with more responsible driving. Motorists should always be mindful that their mistakes while driving could be devastating not only for them but for other road users,” Macie said.
He described the crash as particularly tragic given that it occurred during October Transport Month, when road safety awareness campaigns are being intensified.
“It is unfortunate that while the importance of safe transportation of goods and people is highlighted during October Transport Month, people continue to lose their lives from road crashes. This needs to change, and motorists are an integral part of making the road safer,” he said.
Macie extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
