eThekwini Municipality reopens special debt relief programme
The eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal has reopened its Special Debt Relief Programme, it’s exclusively for customers with existing disputes.
The once-off reinstatement applies to approximately 154 account disputes, they are related to electricity, water and rates bills.
The disputes have a combined value of approximately R112 million.
“There seems to be a level of confusion because it’s not a debt relief program like we’ve had in previous instances. This is specific to customers who have existing disputes with the municipality for their municipal accounts, and those disputes were lodged during the time we have the last debt relief program. If the customer has applied for the that 50% write off, they were disputing their account, they would have been put into a a list of customers. Only those specific customers can actually apply for this debt relief program,” says councillor Dr Jonathan Annipen.
