The National Union of Metalworker’s South Africa (Numsa) Central Committee says it has reached consensus that the upcoming National Congress should be delayed due to a multitude of issues that the union still needs to iron out.

This follows Numsa’s General-Secretary Irvin Jim’s attempt to block the Central Committee’s meeting planned to take place this weekend.

The committee says Jim’s actions are seen to be unlawful and unconstitutional.

They reaffirmed the stance that the work done is in the interest of its members.

Numsa’s Mpumalanga region Chairperson, Nkosinathi Makhanya says, “The Central Committee’s view is that it appears that there is an appetite to strategically delay the National Congress in that the Central Committee identified areas that ought to take place before the National Congress can sit for the consumption of the public. One of those issues or one of those tasks that must happen before the National Congress is that all regions must renew their mandates through regional congresses.”
