The chairperson of Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies Khusela Diko has called on the Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana to speed up interventions to finalize the SABC funding model.

Diko was speaking to SABC News during the 16th annual Percy Qoboza Memorial Lecture at Unisa in Pretoria.

Qoboza was a journalist, author, activists and was vocal against the atrocities of the previous apartheid regime.

This is what Diko had to say. “The apartheid regime would have silenced voices through censorship by government decree. Now in 2026, we don’t see police vans at Auckland Park. However, we see a censorship of a different kind, where our state institutions, the SABC in particular, is being systematically defunded, where we see an erosion in its capacity to be able to inform, educate and entertain, and we are hoping that what we are going to see is public policy priority, which is around ensuring the sustainability of the SABC.“
