Progress has been made in fight against GBVF: Chikunga

Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, says there has been progress made in the fight against Gender Violence and Femicide (GBVF) .

Minister Chikunga has made these remarks ahead of the launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign in Gauteng on Tuesday.

This year’s theme, “Letsema”, calls on the society and media houses to work together to end GBVF.

The 16-day campaign starts on November 25 and ends on December 10.

According to Minister Chikunga, the campaign has made a slight difference.

“There is a difference in as far as the issues of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide are concerned. If we had not done anything as government, civil society, academia and the people of South Africa, the situation would have been much worse than what it is right now. The fact of the matter is, the prevalence is very high; however, because, for instance, we have Thuthuzela centres, and the cases that go via Thuthuzela centres, they actually see a lot of conviction. That is making a difference.”
