Three suspects to appear in Mpumalanga court on extortion charges

Three suspects aged between 46 and 60 are expected to appear at the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on Wednesday after they were arrested on extortion charges.
The suspects were arrested by the Mpumalanga Organised Crime unit in the early hours of this morning.
Among the arrested suspects is a taxi boss. Provincial police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says their charges emanate from an over two-million-rand extortion case that was reported in Kwaggafontein last year.
He says two of the suspects were arrested in Gauteng and one in Mpumalanga.
“They allegedly extorted money from a businessman who’s in the mining industry. So, our members from Organised Crime have been investigating this case since then. It was opened in November 2025. It’s then that we decided that no, now we’ve got strong evidence that we can arrest the suspects. The three of them are expected to appear at the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. For now, they are facing extortion, but we cannot roll out other charges.”
