The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has refuted assertions that the departure of undocumented immigrants would not create immediate jobs for South Africans.

The labour federation says that there are sectors in the country’s labour sphere, that are exclusively manned by foreign nationals, and those are jobs that could improve the high youth unemployment rate in South Africa.

“There has been this narrative that even if all the migrants left tomorrow, it doesn’t mean there will be jobs for South Africans. I don’t think that’s necessarily true because in those sectors, you have retail, you have hospitality, those jobs would be for young people. We have a problem with youth unemployment in this country so I don’t see a young person who would turn up their nose at a job,” says Zanele Sabela, Cosatu’s spokesperson.
