The Road Freight Association (RFA) says the latest reduction in diesel prices will offer limited relief to the trucking industry, with levies and structural costs continuing to push transport prices higher.

The price of diesel dropped by up to R3.25 per litre at midnight, while both grades of petrol increased by R1.43 per litre.

RFA CEO Gavin Kelly said the industry remained under significant pressure despite the adjustment, noting that fuel costs had risen sharply since the start of the year.

“We’ve seen since the beginning of the year roughly a 79 percent increase in the cost of fuel. So, this isn’t going back to what the numbers were at the end of February. This is only the beginning of what we hope is going to be a continual decline and that means that there’s still a fair amount of transporters out there who are struggling with the high cost of fuel,” Kelly said.

He added that while the reduction had brought some relief, its impact remained limited.

“The two-three-rand, depending on the type of diesel that you use, has brought some relief, but still has quite an impact on transporters in the country,” Kelly said.
