Johannesburg on track to resolve Eskom debt issues: Morero
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says he has noted the challenges and disputes the city has with Eskom after the power utility issued a statement flagging the city’s mounting debt.
The City of Johannesburg and City Power owe more than R 5.2 billion in arrears which excludes an additional R 1.5 billion due next month.
Eskom served the city and City Power with a formal notice of intention to reduce or entirely cut electricity supply to certain bulk areas.
Delivering the State of the City Address, Morero says they are on track to resolve these issues.
He says, “This challenge is not only affecting the City of Johannesburg but several municipalities across the country. We will not fight Eskom, we will work with the Minister of Electricity and Energy, the South African Local Government and Association to resolve this particular challenge. ”
Morero says, “We are on track in ensuring that the city resolves the dispute with Eskom. Yes, City Power does have a turnaround plan which addresses this challenge.”
