National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola says Police Minister Senzo Mchunu overstepped his powers in his insistence that the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) be disbanded.

Masemola appeared for a second day before the Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of police corruption.

Masemola was grilled by committee members, including DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach.

Masemola: Even though I told him that this team is doing a good work, we are not supposed to close it. He said we must close it.

Breytenbach: No general you are missing the gist of the question. No, I am sorry. The question is not that you didn’t discuss with him, I am sure you did it. Why you did tell him he is out of his terrain he is encroaching it and he must concern himself with his own business and you concern with yours.

Masemola: Well thanks honourable chair, like I said I did try to tell him let’s not close. He insisted.

Committee members also accused Masemola of exposing the country to criminality and not standing up for South Africans.

Some members said the police chief had a duty to protest against Mchunu’s instruction to disband the PKTT.
