The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has expressed concern over the surge in kidnappings across South Africa. In the latest incident, Tshwane officers on Saturday stopped a suspicious vehicle on the R80 highway in Rosslyn and freed a bound and hooded man from the back seat.

The party said that the concern also stems from the kidnapping of its deputy president Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, last year.

‘The kidnapping of our deputy president, Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, it was a very deeply personal and painful experience for the UDM. That incident brought home a simple, but striking crime in South Africa, has become indiscriminate, if a sitting Member of Parliament can be taken off the streets in that way, then no one is safe. The key lesson we learn as the UDM is that even ordinary public spaces are no longer safe, people are being targeted in broad daylight, often in places they know and trust,” says UDM’s Acting Secretary General is Zandile Phiri.
