South Africans can expect an active day of weather on Wednesday, as widespread showers and thunderstorms develop across the central and eastern regions of the country.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, with the highest risk extending from the Northern Cape through the Free State and North West into Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal.

A surface trough over the interior and a strong ridge of high pressure along the east coast are combining to create unstable conditions, ideal for thunderstorm formation.

These storms are forecast to intensify during the afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, excessive lightning, and large amounts of small hail.

Localised flooding of low-lying roads and bridges is also possible, particularly in the northern and eastern provinces.

Rain chances vary across the country, with scattered to widespread showers expected over the central interior and eastern regions.

Areas such as Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Johannesburg, and Durban are likely to see a 60% to 80% chance of rain and thunderstorms, while parts of the Northern Cape and western interior could experience isolated activity of around 30%.

Coastal areas in the Western Cape and southern regions, including Cape Town, are expected to remain dry.

Residents in the affected areas should remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions. Heavy rainfall may lead to reduced visibility and slippery roads, while strong winds and hail could cause localised damage to property and vehicles.

The public is urged to take precautions, avoid crossing flooded roadways, and stay indoors during periods of lightning.
